What to Wear for Newborn Photos

You’ve just birthed a baby and are feeling on top of things by having scheduled your newborn photos but now you need to figure out what to wear! This is one of the most common questions I get and I’m here to help. You don’t need a whole new wardrobe for the family to create beautiful, timeless newborn photos. My approach to newborn photography is relaxed and baby-led, with a focus on the connection between you and your newest little love. The goal is to keep things simple, comfortable, and cohesive so the focus stays where it belongs: on your growing family.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical white shirts and jeans. Instead, think about choosing outfits that complement one another without looking too matchy-matchy.

I usually suggest starting with mom’s outfit as she needs to feel the most comfortable and beautiful! Now is not the time to try and squeeze into your pre-pregnancy jeans, either. Many moms choose to wear a maternity dress or outfit they wore during their pregnancy.

For example, mom might wear a soft cream dress, dad could wear a light blue linen shirt, and older siblings might wear muted sage or warm beige. Everyone looks connected, but no one looks like they’re wearing a uniform.

Pro tip: Lay everyone’s outfits out together before your session. If the colors feel good together at a glance, you’re probably on the right track! I also give my clients the option of texting me their ideas for feedback.

Stick to Soft Neutrals and Pastels

Soft, neutral colors and gentle pasels photograph beautifully during newborn sessions. Think cream, ivory, oatmeal, beige, warm gray, dusty blue, sage green, blush pink, and other muted tones.

These colors create a light, airy feel and help keep the attention on your baby’s sweet little features rather than bold, loud clothing.

You don’t have to dress everyone in white or beige, though! A little color adds personality and warmth. I especially love soft blues, muted greens, dusty pinks, and subtle earthy tones.

Most of newborn sessions take place within your home – so also consider the color of your furniture and walls!

Keep the Focus on Baby

Your newborn is the star of the show, so the goal is to keep everyone’s outfits simple enough that they don’t distract from your little one.

Avoid large logos, graphic tees, neon colors, and anything with bold wording. These elements can draw the eye away from the moments you’ll most want to remember, like tiny fingers wrapped around yours or the way your toddler gently kisses the baby’s head.

For baby, a classic neutral onesie, a ssoft swaddle, or a simple knit outfit is often all you need. Bare toes, tiny hands, and those adorable newborn details are more than enough!

Choose Comfort Over Everything

If there’s one thing I want you to remember, it’s this: wear something you feel comfortable and confident in.

Neworn sessions are full of snuggles, sitting on a bed, cuddling on the couch, and holding your baby close. You’ll be moving around, leaning in for kisses, and most likely getting a little spit-up on you! Babies will also want to eat – so if you’re a nursing mother, wear something that’s easy to nurse in.

For new moms, a dress with a little movement, a comfortable sweater, or a flattering top with relaxed pants can look beautiful while making nursing or feeding your baby easier.

Dads, you don’t need to overthink it! A well-fitting neutral shirt and comfortable pants are perfect.

Focus on Textures Over Patterns

When it comes to creating visual interest in your outfits, I love texture! Instead of reaching for busy prints or bold patterns,, look for interesting fabrics and subtle details.

Think chunky knit sweaters, linen shirts, ribbed onesies, gauzy cotton dresses, soft muslin swaddles, delicate embroider, or a little lace.

These textures add depth and dimension to your photos without overwhelming the image. They also look beautiful in close-up photographs of your family cuddling together.

If you do love patterns, that’s okay! Just keep them subtle and minimal. A small floral print or a delicate stripe can work beautifully when paired with simpler pieces.

The goal is to create a collecition of outfits that feels natural, timeless, and full of warmth.

Don’t Forget the Little Details

A few small choices can help pull everything together.

  • Keep accessories simple. Delicate jewelry, a simple watch, or a meaningful heirloom piece can add a personal touch without distracting from the moment.
  • Consider you surroundings. If we’re photographing in your home, choose colors that complement your space.
  • Think about your feet. For most in-home or studio newborn photos I suggest going barefoot or wearing cozy socks. It adds to the warm, homey feeling of these photos.

7. Let Your Family’s Personality Shine

While I love a soft, neutral palette, there are no hard and fast rules. If your family loves color, wear a little color! If your style is more casual, don’t feel pressured to dress up. If you love a beaitufl floral dress or a cozy oversized sweater – let’s do it!

Your newborn photos should feel like your family, not a styleed photoshoot that could belong to just anyone.

My approach is all about capturing the real moments: the way you look at your baby, your toddler’s curious little face, dad’s protective snuggles, and even the family dog trying to get in on the action.

The best outfits are the ones that let you relax and enjoy these moments.

Need a Little Help Choosing Outfits?

I know there’s a lot to think about when preparing for a new baby, which is why I provide helpful preparation and wardrobe guides before your newborn session. I’ll help you think through colors, clothing choices, and the little details.

Whether we’re photographying your family in the comfort of your home, or in the studio, my goal is to make the entire experience feel easy, relaxed and enjoyable.

You don’t need a perfectly styled home, fresh new looks straight from a catalog, or a perfectly behaved toddler. You just need to show up ready to love on your newest little human.
