Top 7 Ideas for an Unforgettable Family Photoshoot

A lovely family photoshoot can be a great way to help you and your family express who you really are. Finding inspiration to really nail a memorable, unique set can take a bit of previous know-how and a smudge of intuition.

As a family photographer in Seattle with years of experience, I know a few ways any family can turn their photoshoot into something fun, eye-catching, and uniquely “them.”

Location

As a family photographer in Seattle, I know there’s an abundance of absolutely breathtaking locations with tons of texture and visual interest. And, frankly, finding the right location can be overwhelming. My advice? Choose a location that has sentimental meaning and significance. You can even ask friends/family/ your photographer what their favorite locations are if you’ve absolutely hit a brick wall as far as ideas go.

Coordinate Your Outfits

One of the best parts of any vacation is buying new clothes and accessories! Coordinating, planning, and editing your outfit choices can be fun for everyone during the pre-photoshoot process. Just make sure that you give everyone options when it comes to their choice of outfits. Whether it’s a specific motif or an inside joke, find something that is “on-brand” for your family photoshoot.

Reward

Plan a little something special for during or after the photoshoot (e.g, going out to a nice restaurant, the beach, or even a nice picnic). It’s a great way to have a bit of fun during an otherwise hectic day and show off the whole family dressed to the nines!

Rest

Do your best to minimize planned errands/activities on the actual day of the photoshoot. Give your family ample time to prepare, and pack some and snacks to keep hunger at bay throughout the day.

Prep, Prep, and Some More Prep!

Making sure that everyone is ready for a photoshoot (especially if you have younger kids) might involve a bit of time and communication. Make sure your kids are warmed up to the idea of sitting still while a stranger is taking their picture by talking to them about what to expect. Consider introducing your photographer by name. You can even bring one of their favorite comfort toys as a prop! Candid playtime pictures make for wholesome pictures that will last a lifetime.

Make it Seasonal

Everyone loves a festive, seasonal photoshoot. But, as a photographer, what I see time and time again is people limiting themselves to one season when the possibilities are endless! Every season has something special to offer, so go wild and let your festive flag fly! If you have any photos themed around a particular season from last year, try mixing it up this time with different solstice celebrations!

Keep it Relaxed

Everyone wants to make sure that they have a great, timeless photoshoot that will show off the best in the people actually in the picture. That’s why it’s important to trust that your photographer is here to do just that by keeping things chill and making sure that everyone is happy and relaxed. After all, the best pictures come from people having a genuinely good time.
