If you’re in the midst of planning a photography session, whether it’s for your newborn baby or just a general family session, you’ve probably heard the term ‘mini session’ mentioned quite a bit.
There are a few differences when it comes to a mini photography session vs a custom or full photography session. Here’s what you need to know before you decide which shoot is best for you.

Time Limits:

This is of course one of the main differences between the two sessions. A custom photography session with Emily will last an hour or two (newborn) while a mini sessions are typically only scheduled at select times throughout the year, with several mini sessions scheduled in one day since they only last about 10 – 20 minutes at most.

Number of Poses:

Secondly, a custom photography session will allow for as many poses as possible within the time booked. There is more time for your family to get comfortable, playful, and a chance for your personalities to come out. I love to follow you (your kids’) lead during the session so that it really feels like YOU. A mini session offers less time so I typically have a set number of poses/prompts that I have determined yield the most amount of authentic moments to capture in our short time.

Number of Photos:

While your photographer will still try and shoot as many photos as possible during your mini session, you will naturally end up with fewer photos than you would if you had booked a custom session. A full session Emily Ann Photography between generates between 75 – 100 images while a mini session will yield about 40. However, while my full sessions are all-inclusive (you receive all of the digital images) mini session clients receive a smaller amount of images (typically 5) for their initial investment. Clients can upgrade to more images after they receive the proofing gallery.

So which photography session is best for you?

You may be surprised to find that many of our clients actually choose both! Often our clients will opt for the custom session for the entire family at a location of their choice. This gives them more time to play around with poses, backdrops, props and wardrobe changes. While they opt for mini sessions to get a few great photos of the kiddos as a compliment in between the custom sessions. Mini sessions are great for specific holidays or seasons.
A great option is to take advantage of the gorgeous spring and summer months in the Pacific Northwest with a full outdoor session then sign up for a quick mini session to get some holiday photos!

When to choose a Custom Full Session:

– You want a custom location such as your home or favorite outdoor spot.
– Your kids are young and/or slow to warm up (think newborn to age 7).
– You’re wanting authentic “lifestyle” images showcasing your personality.

Mini Sessions are great if:
– You’ve worked with me before and know what to expect!
– Your kids are a bit older and listen well (think teenagers).
– You just need a few updated shots for a specific season (think holiday card).
– You’re on a strict budget.

Regardless of which you choose, I look forward to working with you! Be sure to add yourself to my mailing list to be notified of calendar openings and mini session events!
