Bringing home your new baby means introducing them to family members – and for many Seattle families, your dog is your first baby. Including your dogs in newborn photos is so important because it tells the whole story of your family. The best ways to include your dog in your Seattle newborn photos is to introduce them slowly and safely and with intention.

Safety First, Always

Your baby’s safety and comfort is always at the forefront of every newborn session. And for that reason, we will have a conversation up front about including your dog and what ways will feel the safest and most comfortable for everyone. Parents, you know your dog’s personality better than anyone. Is your dog calm and curious or anxious and high-energy? I have lots of tips and tricks on how best to prepare and how to include your dog in some meaningful newborn photos.

Including Your Dog in Your Newborn Photos Naturally

There are many creative ways we can include your furry-friends to tell the story of your whole family. It’s not about perfect poses, but more about connection (my mindset for all my photography).

Here are some examples of creatively including your dog in newborn photos:

  • Your dog laying nearby, just watching.
  • Dog curled up at your feet while you hold/nurse baby
  • Dog laying next to the crib or bassinet where baby safely lies
  • Detail shot of dog’s paw next to baby’s hand or foot.
  • Dog’s tail wagging in the foreground while family sits on the couch cuddling

A little unpredictability is always the case when involving dogs and babies – we go with the flow to see what transpires!

How to Prepare for your Newborn Session with Dogs

A little prep makes a big difference when it comes to working with newborns and dogs. I always recommend a walk or playtime before I get there to help your pup settle and get their energy out. It’s also a good idea to have comfort items available for your dog such as treats, toys and other familiar items. And lastly, lower your expectations! Babies cry and dogs don’t always listen. Once everyone is relaxed you can truly be present and just enjoy the moment.

The Meaning Behind Newborn Photos with Dogs

All of this may seem like a lot to tackle – especially because you just had a baby! But I promise, the little extra effort it is to prepare your dog for a family photoshoot will be worth it in the long run! We all know dogs don’t live as long as they should – another reason these photos will be so important to you some day! Capturing the first days as a family with a new bundle + the furry love of you life = priceless!

Including your dog in your newborn session is about honoring your full family story. With a thoughtful approach to safety, a creative eye, and attention to the details, we can create images that feel genuine, emotional and uniquely yours.

And years from now, those photos won’t just show what your family looked like – they’ll remind you exactly how it felt in those first, fleeting days together – chaos and all.
