Style Tips for Timeless, Cozy Looks for your Fall Family Photos in Seattle

What to Wear for Your Seattle Fall Family Photos: Style Tips for Timeless, Cozy Looks

Fall in the Seattle area brings a perfect mix of vibrant foliage, cool air, and soft, diffused light—an ideal backdrop for your family photos. To create images that feel timeless and reflect your unique family style, what you wear plays a big role. Here are my top tips on dressing for fall photos in the Pacific Northwest, where textures, layers, and comfort are key.

MOM:

Mom, you’re the heart of the family, and your outfit sets the tone for everyone else. I love seeing moms in dresses! A dress adds movement, texture, and a touch of elegance to photos. Choose something that’s comfortable, and make sure it has some flow—this adds beautiful movement in the breeze or when you’re spinning your littles around. Opt for dresses in earthy tones like soft greens, dusty pinks, warm taupes, or creamy neutrals. Look for details like lace, embroidery, or subtle patterns that add depth and visual interest. If you’re not a dressy-gal, have no fear! There are lots of other options – flowy blouse, slouchy sweater showing some shoulder with a fun pair of pants (again look for texture; twill, corduroy, velvet).

Textures to Consider:

  • Knits: A chunky sweater or a knit shawl over a flowy dress can bring a cozy feel.
  • Velvet or Corduroy: Both add richness and warmth, perfect for a fall palette.
  • Lace or Sheer Elements: Adds softness and texture, without being overpowering.

Focus on Comfort & Movement

While you want to look your best, comfort is key, especially when you’re wrangling little ones! Choose fabrics that feel good to wear and allow you to move easily, whether you’re sitting on a blanket or chasing after your kids.

AVOID: Black (absorbs light and you disappear)!, tight, restrictive clothing, short skirts!

KIDS:

Fall in Seattle can be unpredictable, so layering is key! Bundling up can be stylish! So in addition to the tips above about color and texture,  layer up with cozy details like peacoats, knit hats, and boots. Layers not only keep them warm but also add dimension and texture to the photo. Plus, kids in cute hats or cozy scarves always make for heartwarming moments.

Great Layering Pieces:

  • Peacoats or wool jackets: Perfect for both kids and dads to stay warm and look sharp.
  • Textured Sweaters: For everyone, textured sweaters like cable knits add a cozy fall vibe.
  • Accessories: It’s all in the details! Add some fun accessories for visual interest. Don’t forget SHOES!

For tweens and older kids – let their personality shine through with something fun! They can be a bit edgier than the rest of the fam with maybe a graphic t-shirt under a jacket or button down shirt, some funky boots or fun jewelry.

DAD: Dont’ overthink it. Stick to timeless staples like jeans or khakis, and layer with henleys, sweaters, or casual jackets. Henleys with subtle textures or patterns can bring visual interest without overpowering the scene.

Avoid: Black, stuffy work attire, golf polos and athletic fabrics.

What to Avoid

Photography is all about light, and certain colors and styles can detract from your photos. Here’s what to avoid:

  • Black: It absorbs light, making the person wearing it appear flat and lost in the image. Instead, go for lighter or muted tones that reflect light better.
  • Neon Colors: These create harsh color casts and distract from the natural beauty of the setting.
  • Logos and Graphics: Keep the focus on your family, not brand names or characters.
  • Dirty Sneakers: Pay attention to footwear! Clean boots or stylish shoes tie the outfit together. No dirty, worn-out sneakers for kids—opt for clean, stylish shoes or boots.

Footwear Matters

Shoes can sometimes be an afterthought, but they make a big impact in photos. Stick to clean, neutral-toned boots, loafers, or stylish sneakers. For moms, ankle boots or even a pair of stylish flats that go with your dress can elevate your look. Kids’ shoes should be clean and match the overall vibe—avoid brightly colored sneakers that can draw attention away from their adorable outfits!

Final Thoughts: Confidence & Comfort is Key!

Above all, wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. If you feel great in your outfit, it will shine through in your photos. With the right combination of textures, layers, and colors, your fall family photos will be beautiful, timeless, and full of warmth.

Let’s create memories together this fall!
